In The Rider's Own Words
On April 24 while attending the Alabama BMW rally at Huntsville,
Jinx and I had a serious motorcycle accident. We had been riding,
for about an hour, with a group of about 12, over twisting rural roads, in
the mountain foothills. [Dave
Note: This was an official group ride led by the local club.] Debris
on the "line" caused the rider immediately in front of me to "straighten up"
and "step out" briefly and led me to prematurely assume the curve was ended.
I followed suit. That adjustment required us to use an increased
lean in order to follow the actual, decreasing radius turn. Speed about 35
mph. I exceeded the lean angle limit of my machine riding 2 up. Next
I knew both of us were hitting the asphalt. Jinx was badly
bruised but not broken.
My Injuries:
My right leg was broken and is now held together with multiple pins and plates. My
jaw was fractured and lips pierced.
My Current Condition: At 2 months
I am starting to walk a little with crutches. My ankle knee and
hip joints are atrophied from lack of use while the lower leg bone knitted.
I drove a car for the first time in 2 months this week. I'm now
eating soft solid food and I'll have serious dental repair to get my teeth
into a semblance of alignment for chewing.
Our Income And Insurance Situation:
[Dave Note: We believe him. And so should you. Tom is an engineer by trade and the plant laid everyone off. Insurance coverage ceased.].
Still unemployed and without medical insurance. Had minimum legal coverage on the bike. $1000 per person per incident medical. Covered the emergency room costs only. Have $50,000 and growing outstanding medical bills at this time and I am on a cash only basis for follow up care.
Equipment Issues: What Worked Or Did Not
Jinx's Aria helmet performed perfectly. Absorbed a medium heavy road strike on the right side. My Nolan helmet "oil canned" the chin bar -- collapsed it and then it sprang back -- resulting in multiple jaw fractures and lip laceration. After impact the chin bar popped back out leaving the helmet looking "as new" again. Apparently I led with my chin. My leg seems to have been broken by impacting the road alone. No abrasions or cuts.

There are more riders out there who for no fault of their own need a good word, a helping hand, and a buck or two. If you've been in a similar situation, get off your buttisimo and register. If a bunch of riders send small bucks, that's all that's needed.
